I'm sure you could get good enough functionality using Vim extensions and a privacy minded sync software such as Syncthing, but I'm happy to support the developers with my money for something that adds value for me and frees up time doing things that matter to me instead of managing notes across all my devices and making sure everything is properly synced and up to date. But now I write much faster and have much better organization AND can use it for both work and home. I even used to have voice recordings in Evernote. I dropped Evernote for SN, but have had to adapt my way of taking notes: no embedded images, no bullet points, no embedded URL links.
